Each year, millions of people are killed or seriously injured due to road accidents. To overcome this safety problem, Gill Pratt, CEO, Research and Development at Toyota, turned to artificial intelligence to preserve life, before autonomous cars had seen the light of day.
In fact, Gill Pratt can’t accept the million deaths that according to him exceed the loss of life due to war every year. During his recent trip to Japan, in his speech Mr. Pratt discussed the future of the automobile, and the subsidiary he runs focusing on robotics and artificial intelligence.
His approach seems more plausible than that of some manufacturers who dangle the promise to their customers of 100% autonomous cars without drivers in the short term, within 5 years. The distinctive approach of Toyota is marked by the fact that they actually want to improve road safety and save lives, tackling the most urgent issues.
The "guardian angel" car is very logical if one takes into account that even though deaths occur on our roads, a fatal accident takes place every 160 million kilometers in the U.S. and Japan. It should also be noted that people are driving better today when one considers the many kilometers travelled.
Parallel to the development of these new technologies, at Toyota, we’re always improving certain mechanical components such as the emergency braking system and speed regulators, in order to prevent fatal collisions.
