Have you drunk too much alcohol at a party? Don’t end up camping out in your car!

Let’s say you’ve spent an evening with friends at the bar, enjoying too many shots of liquor. As a responsible person, you stop drinking several hours before you need to leave, and decide to doze off in your car just to be safe.

If a police officer sees you sleeping in your car, you may suffer the same consequences as driving while impaired.

In fact, the law prohibits driving a vehicle while impaired, but also being in charge and in control.

Examples of evidence that you’re in charge and in control:

  • Sitting in the driver's seat, even if the vehicle is stopped.
  • Being in the vehicle (even asleep in the back seat) and being able to start the car.
  • Being near the vehicle (shovelling snow off the car, putting things in the trunk, listening to the radio, etc.).

So here are two things to avoid: telling someone to shovel snow off your car or trying to sober up by napping in your car for a few hours, waiting for the effects of the alcohol to wear off.
